Today is Read Across America Day! Created in 1998, Read Across America is a day to celebrate getting kids excited about reading. A few years ago I began volunteering in my second grader’s class to help read Book-in-a-Bag with the students. I feel such a personal joy seeing reading start to “click” for this age group. This is the time when reading goes from a skill to a hobby and passion for kids.
Kids don’t always remember what they read, but they remember how they felt when they snuggled up with a family member to read or hear a story. They remember the excitement of finding a book that interests them. They remember the pride when they finished a page or sounded out a hard word and heard an affirmative “great job!” After watching this light turn on for kids, I decided to keep volunteering every year.
My kids are certified library lovers. We love to visit our beautiful Waukesha Public Library and check out the many books, resources, and activities going on at the library (especially Studio 321)! A few summers ago, we decided to adopt a few of the local Little Free Libraries, regularly stopping to top them off with books. Anytime you see me out, I can guarantee there is a box of kids books in my trunk just in case I see one running a bit low.
I believe every kid in our community should have access to books they love. So in honor of Read Across America Day, let’s spread some joy and help get kids (and adults) excited about reading! Add a book to a Little Free Library, cozy up with your favorite book, or read with loved ones in your life.
You don’t improve student literacy skills by banning books and locking up librarians. You improve literacy skills by fostering a lifelong love of reading in kids.
